HIGH DENSITY W-UO$sub 2$ BY ACTIVATED SINTERING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4803568
Activated sintering of Ni-doped W powders in hydrogen was confirmed at temperatures as low as 1100 deg C. The presence of considerable UO/sub 2/, however, causes the Ni additive to lose much of its effect. The relative merits of Ni and/or TiO/sub 2/ additives as activators in W-50 vol% UO/sub 2/ mixtures were investigated with regard to particle size and sintering cycle. At a temperature of 1700 deg C some of these W-50 vol% UO/sub 2/ compositions could be sintered to near theoretical density in 1 to 4 hr. The effect of hydrogen and vacuum atmospheres on the sintered density of these materials was compared to similar effects observed with W and Re powders. (auth)
