SINTERING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF CONTROLLED HYDROGEN CONTENT

Journal Article · · Journal of Nuclear Materials (Netherlands)
For UO/sub 2/ powders not fired above 800 deg C during reduction, with a BET surface around 5--6 m/sup 2//g and a O/U ratio (stored in air) between 2.13 and 2.20, the standard nuclear requirements (95% crystallographic density or more, density dispersion less than 2%, open porosity below 1%, composition stoichiometric) were achieved by the Ar + 3% vol H/sub 2/ cycle with a maximum sintering temperature of 1200 deg C. Results obtained with the cycle were superior to any obtained with a hydrogen-only cycle up to 1700 deg C, for this type of powder. (P.C.H.)
