PRODUCTION OF HIGH DENSITY SINTERED URANIUM OXIDE
A process for obtaining a sintered UO/sub 2/ ceramic of high density for use as a reactor fuel is patented. The process consists of compacting a mixture of powdered oxide of U in the composition range UO/sub 2.1/ to UO/sub 2.25/ with up to 0.1% by weight of Pt uniformly dispersed over the surface of the oxide particles. The compacted mixture is sintered at a temperature of 1400 deg C. The Pt is dispersed over the surface of the oxide particles by mixing the UO/sub 2/ with a water solution of a Pt salt and heating the mixture in an inert atmosphere to decompose the salt. The sintered compacted body may be heated in H to a temperature of 1200 deg C to reduce the oxide to UO/sub 2/ of stoichiometric ratio. (M.P.G.)
