S>Uranium oxide, having the composition UO/sub 2.1/ to UO/sub 2.25/ is so pulverized that it acquires a surface of 2 m/sup 2//g and mixed with such a quantity of a (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/ Pt Cl/sub 6/ sol. that the paste contains 0.1 wt% Pt. The paste is compacted, sintered in an inert atm. at 1400 deg C and finally heated at 1200 deg C in hydrogen. The final UO/sub 2/ compact has a density of 10.73 to 10.90 g/cm/sup 3/. (NPO)
