Sintered uranium dioxide ceramic material of high density is produced by using as the starting material a mixture of an oxide of uranium in the composition range UO/sub 2.1/ to UO/sub 2.25/ with a surface area of the order of 2 m/sup 2//g. Up to 0.1 wt% of platinum is uniformly dispersed over the surface of the oxide particles. (R.J.S.)
