ACTIVATED SINTERING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE FUEL. I. SINTERING IN HYDROGEN (in Japanese)
UO/sub 2/ powders with a small amount of the additives TiO/sub 2/, BeO, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, MgO, V/sub 2/O/sub 5/, ZrO/sub 2/, CaO, and CeO/sub 2/ a re sintered at 1,400 to 1,700 deg C for 1 to 9 hr in hydrogen. Accelerating effects of these additives on sintering are determined by the densities and porosities of the sintered pellets and the microscopic structures of their free surfaces. Addition of TiO/sub 2/ pronouacedly accelerates the sintering rate of UO/sub 2/. Even its slight addition is effective in lowering the sintering temperature. Thus high sintered density is obtained. BeO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are also notably effective in accelerating the sintering rate. The next effective additive among the oxides in this experiment is MgO. Maximum accelerating effect of TiO/sub 2/ is observed at 0.3% and that of BeO at 0.03%. Only minor effects are observed for the addition of V/sub 2/O/sub 5/, ZrO/sub 2/, and CaO, and nearly no effect for CeO/sub 2/. (auth)
