ACTIVATED SINTERING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE FUEL. II. SINTERING IN WET HYDROGEN AND IN VACUUM (in Japanese)
The effect of sintering atmospheres and additives on the sintering rate and grain growth of UO/sub 2/ was examined. The main results are summarized as follows: (1) Vacuum atmosphere accelerates the sintering rate of UO/sub 2/ powder. It would be mainly due to the acceleration of diffusion phenomena by the presence of excess oxygen ion, and partially due to the vaporization and condensation near the surface of UO/sub 2/ particies and open pores. (2) TiO/sub 2/ addition pronouncedly accelerates the sintering rate and grain growth of UO/sub 2/ powder, because TiO/sub 2/ (or lower oxide of Ti) locally forms an eutectic of low melting point with UO/sub 2/ and it accelerates the diffusion of oxygen ion. (3) BeO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are not soluble in UO/sub 2/, and these minute addition (0.01 approximates 0.03%) are able to accelerate the sintering rate of UO/sub 2/. Eutectic points of UO/sub 2/-BeO, and UO/sub 2/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ systems are very high and cross sections of thermal neutron absorption are very low. So, both BeO and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are considered to be desirable additives. (4) Al/ sub 2/O/sub 3/ improves the stoichiometry of UO/sub 2/, but it deiays the sintening rate of UO/sub 2/ in vacuum.
