MARITIME GAS-COOLED REACTOR PROGRAM. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY STUDIES OF FABRICATION TECHNIQUES APPLICABLE TO THE MANUFACTURE OF HIGH-DENSITY BERYLLIA TUBES FOR POTENTIAL UTILIZATION IN THE MARITIME GAS-COOLED REACTOR. Final Report, May 9 to June 30, 1960
This report was originally issued as Brush Beryllium Co. Technical Report No. 179. The development and preliminary evaluation of beryllia base cements are described for the joining of multiple beryllia segments. A UOX BeO body composition, amenable to air firing to high densities, was developed by additions of A1/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Also investigated were the BeO-MgO, BeO-ZrO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, MgO- ZrO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/, /al/sub 2/O/ sub 3/-ZrO/sub 2/, and ZrO/sub 2/-SiO/sub 2/. Singular additions of SiO/sub 2/ and SiO/sub 2/ in combination with Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ or ZrO/sub 2/ did not improve the sinterability in air atmospheres. Binary combinations of 1% Al/sub 2/ O/sub 3/ + 2% MgO, 2% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + 1% ZrO/sub 2/, or 1% MgO + 2% ZrO/sub 2/ beneficiated the sinterability of UOX BeO in air atmospheres comparable to the density ranges achieved by the singular additions of A/sib 2/O/sub 3/. The exploratory studies on extrusion, isostatic and cold axial pressing, and the slip- casting fabrication of a beryllia, single-hole, hexagonal tube are reviewed. (auth)
