STUDIES ON THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF RADIATION AND VARIOUS CHEMICALS ON CELL DIVISION. XXII. THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF X-RAYS AND PREDNISOLONE ON MTK-SARCOMA III CELLS
Three to four days after transplantation of MTK-sarcoma IlI in rats, prednisolone was given by intraperitoneal injection at a dose level of 10 mg per 100 g of body weight. The administration of prednisolone caused an increase in the frequency of mitosis after a preliminary slight decrease. The mitotic cells in each phase changed in proportion to the mitotic index. Morphologically, gradually after the injection, there appeared swelling or breakdown of the cytoplasm and abnormal chromosomes showing signs of stickiness and thickening in the metaphase. The injection of prednisolone after x irradiation resulted in slightly restrained mltosis. The combined effects of the prednisolone treatment followed by x irradiation, especially when the injection was given 3 to 5 hr before x irradiation, were seen in the marked morphological effects on the mitotic tumor cells. Even treatment with 0.1-0.5 mg prednisolone per 100 g of body weight 3 hr before x irradiatlon restrained the frequency of mitosis. Radiosensitizing effects on the sarcoma cells were observed as a result of prednisolonetreatment. (Abstr. Japan Med., 1: No. 15, 1961)
