Van de Graaff Energy Resolution

The effective energy spread at the controlled proton beam from the Duke 3-Mev Van de Graaff accelerator was measured at a machine energy of 1.75 Mev with the C13(p, gamma ) resonance. The resolution width was found to be 540 ev, indicating a beam spread of ~400 ev. There was no significant change in the spread with slit width, and it is concluded that excellent beam energy resolution mav be obtained even with an inexpensive beam deflection magnet.
