A simple method for improving the energy resolution of the ion beam of a Van de Graaff accelerator is described. The voltage variations of the high- potential terminal are sensed by a probe through capacitive coupling. This signal is then amplified to correspond to the variation of the terminal and applied to the target so that the effect of the voltage variation is canceled. The effective energy of the Van de Graaff is changed in small increments by biasing the target with a stepping-voltage power supply. (auth)
