ENERGY MODULATION OF A 3.6 MILLION VOLT VAN DE GRAAFF ELECTROSTATIC ACCELERATOR

Energy of a 3.6 Mev electrostatic accelerator is modulated upward to match the rising magnetic field in the Cosmotron, thus providing a longer injection period and consequently higher accelerated beam intensity. The modulating voltage, generated by a resonant charging system, is capacitively induced in the high voltage terminal by an insulated liner in the Van de Graaff tank. (auth)
