EVIDENCE OF CHARGE EXCHANGE OF $pi$ to the minus MESONS STOPPED IN BOUND HYDROGEN (in Russian)

Charge exchange by 75-Mev pi /sup -/ mesons passing through a system of scintillation counters and bremsstrahlung filters and stopping in polyethylene or liquid hydrogen targets was recorded. The gamma quanta from pi /sup 0/ decay were recorded with a Cherenkov spectrometer insensitive to background emissions. The signals from the counter and spectrometers were collected in a fast coincidence scheme. The probability ratio for pi /sup 0/ production is W/sub H2/ W/sub CH2/ = 290 plus or minus 40. The statistical order of error is about 5% The ratio for W/sub H2/W/sub CH2/ indicates an intense pi /sup -/ capture by carbon nuclei during charge exchange in polyethylene. (R.V.J.)
