Detection of Charge Exchange in $pi$-Mesons Stopped in Bound Hydrogen Nuclei; OBNARUZHENIE PEREZARYADKI OSTANOVIVSHIKHSYA $pi$-MEZONOV NA YADRAKH SVYAZANNOGO VODORODA

Meson pi /sup -/ charge exchange in polyethylene was evaluated with a high-frequency spectrometer monitoring a 75-Mev pi /sup -/ beam (passing through a system of scintillation counters and bremsstrahlung filters). Cherenkov spectrometers insensitive to background radiation were used for measuring pi / sup -0/ decay gamma quanta produced by stopped pi /sup -/. The ratio of pi/ sup production in hydrogen and polyethylene was W/sub H/sub 2/W/sub CH/sub 2/ = 290 plus or minus 40. The statistical order of accuracy was over 5%. The magnitude W/sub H/sub 2/W/sub CH/sub 2/ in pi /sup -/ charge exchange in pol yethylene is characterized by intense pi /sup -/ capture by hydrogen nuclei. (R.V.J.)
