EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE PROBABILITY FOR THE /cap beta/-DECAY OF THE $pi$$sup +$-MESON

The following decay of the positive pion was sought: pi /sup +/ yields pi/sup 0/ + e/sup +/ + lambda . This decay is analogous to the usua l beta decay of the nucleon. The meson beam was stopped and registered in a scintillation counter, while the gamma quanta resulting from the pi decay were detected in two Cherenkov spectrometers set at 180 deg to one another. Cver a period of about 30 hr approximately 1.4 x 10/sup 9/ pi /sup +/ mesons were registered. During that time one event was recorded. This event could be assigned either to the pion decay sought for, or to the charge exchange of the pi / sup +/ meson in the scintillator, an occurrence that could also result in a neutral pion. From this result an upper limit was set, lambda < 7 x 10/sup 8/, where lambda is the ratio of the probability for the beta decay of the pion to the probability for the ordinary decay of the pion into a muon. It is also found that the wesk vector coupling constant, G, for the beta decay of the pion is less than 2.5 G/sub BB/ where G/sub BETA / is equal to 1.4 x 10/sup -49/0 erg c m/sup 3/ as determined from the beta decay of O/sup 14/.
