MEASURING THE PROBABILITY FOR THE REACTION $mu$$sup -$ + He$sup 3$ $Yields$ H$sup 3$ + $nu$ (in Russian)

A diffusion chamber in a m netic field H = 6000 Oe was filled with He/ sup 3/ gas at a press e of 20 atm, and was irradiated with a beam of mesons h ving a momentum of 217 Mev/c. The mesons were slowed down with a copper filter placed in front of the chamber. About 105 photographs were subjected to a double scan for tracks having a length L/sub 0/ > 20 mm in order to identify the mesons that were stopped. The total number of events from the reaction mu /sup -/ + He/ sup 3/ yields H/sup 3/ + nn was established by counting all stars at a range of 2.0 to 2.6 mg/cm/sup 2/. A total of 106 events was observed at L/sub 0/ > 20 mm. The number of mu -e decays observed was 35,500. The absolute capture probability was determined from the known lifetime of the muon (2.21 x 10/sup -6/ seconds) and the above data. The probability of the above reaction was found to be LAMBDA (He/sup 3//sub exp/ = (1.36 plus or minus 0.18) 10/sup -1/ sec/sup - 1/. This valu e agrees well with a theoretical value of LAMBDA (He/sup 3/)/sub theor/ = 1.54 x 10/sup 3/ sec/sup -1/. (TTT)
