EFFECT OF RADIATION ON NUCLEIC ACID METABOLISM. I. STUDY ON THE NUCLEIC ACID CONTENTS OF VARIOUS ORGANS
Single whole-body irradiations of x rays and neutron flux were given to various groups of rats, and acid-soluble phosphate, phospholipids and nucleic acid contents were measnred by a modified Schmidt-Thannhauser method. In the liver, DNA-P was slightly reduced 2 days affer a 600 r irradiation, but returned gradually to the normal level at the 6th day. Such restoration, however, was not seen at the 6th day after a 1000 r irradiation. In the spleen, the DNA-P after a 600 r exposure was decreased markedly at the 2nd day and was not restored. The DNA-P of the intestine decreased to about 1/3 and rose gradually to a normal level. Acid-soluble phosphate in the liver was slightly decreased, but in the spleen a moderate to marked decrease was seen at the 2nd day. The nucleic acid content of the liver and spleen after whole-body irradiation with neutrons of 4.0 x 10/sup 10/ flux (sq cm/sup 2/) showed similar changes following 600800 r x- irradiation. On irradiation with neutrons (1.5 x 10/sup 10/ flux) the DNA-P of the spleen was considerably reduced, but recovery rapidly ensued. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 2, Feb. 1962).
