INFLUENCE OF ROENTGEN IRRADIATION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM ON NUCLEIC ACIDS OF LIVER CELLS (in Polish)

A study was made of the content of nucleic acids in the liver cells of the rat after roentgen irradiation of the centrah nervous system. The first group of animals received a single dose of 600 r; the second group received two doses of 600 r each in 24 hours' interval; the third group was treated with a single dose of 1200 r. The amount of nucleic acids was determined immediately after irradiation, and then after 2 hours, 24 hours, 7 days, and 2l days. The histophotometric method was applied to histological preparations; DNA and RNA were determined in liver homogenate by the method of Schneider. The results of the investigations, after statistical analysis, suggested that, after roentgen irradiation of the central nervous system of the rat, changes in the nucleic acid content of liver cells can be observed. These changes affect mainiy the DNA content in the nucleus, which decreases during the first hours after irradiation with the single doses of 600 r and l200 r, and after the repeated dose of 600 r. The decrease of the DNA content is transient. No distinct changes in the RNA content were observed. Slight variations from the control value were observed immediately after the repeated dose of 600 r. The transient changes in the DNA content are probably the result of increased mitosis and of the scanty instances of caryorrhexis. (auth)
