INFLUENCE OF PREVIOUS IMMUNIZATION WITH LIVING AND DEAD E. COLI CELLS ON THE RADIATION RESISTANCE OF ANIMALS (in Russian)

It was previously established that vaccination of animals with bacterial antigens increases their resistance to subsequent radiation by lethal doses of x and gamma radiation. Before this method can be put to practical use, the behavior of the various vaccines must be known, and the optimum conditions must be determined. Such experiments were carried out on various animals, using Breslau bacteria killed by heating, BCG vaccine, and live culture of E. Coli for immunization. The animals were exposed to 500 r of x rays. The results indicated that vaccination prior to irradiation increases the resistance of mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and dogs, as shown by the lengthening of their average life span and by the reduction of the severity of the clinical symptoms. This beneficial effect of vaccination is not connected with antimicrobeal immunity and may be due to the formation of antibodies against the decay products in the tissue. (TTT)
