Twenty-five guinea pigs were vaccinated aerogenically with live Brucella vaccine, and thirty were immunized intradermally for comparison. Both sets were divided into two groups; one was subjected to a 250 r dose of irradia tion 5 hours before the injection of the vaccine, and the second group was used as immunization control. A third group of 10 guinea pigs received a similar radiation dose without subsequent vaccination (radiation control). The irradiated guinea pigs, vaccinated aerogenically, developed 3rd and 4th degree radiation sickness and 60% of the animals died in 8 to l4 days. The irradiated controls developed 2nd and 3rd degree radiation sickness with only l0% mortality in 30 days. The main causes of death were severe intestinal hemorrhages, autoinfection and, in two case s, widespread subpleural, inte rstitial hemorrhages throughout the whole lung with general hemorrhagic oedema. None of the non-irradiated and aerogenically vaccinated -animals died, and dissection after vaccination revealed only hyperplasia of the reticulo-histiocytic elements of the lung and other organs and tissues. Guinea pigs irradiated and vaccinated intradermally, developed 2nd and 3rd degree sickness, and 10% died in 30 days. It was concluded that among guinea pigs aerogenically immunized with live Brucella vaccine flve hours after irradiation with 250 r there is an increase in mortality in radiation sickness as compared with intradermally immunized animals and a depression of immunogenesis throughout the period of illness.
