White male mice (635 in number) and white male rats (495) were irradiated in special plexiglass containers in groups of 10 to 20 for the mice and of 3 for the rats. The adsorbed dose was calculated from the amount of induced C/sup 11/ formed by a C/sup 12/(p,pn)C/sup 11/ reaction in a piece of carbon which was irradiated at the same time as the animals. The LD/sub 50/50/ value for the mice was found to be ~ 1050 rads. The minimum absolute lethal dose was 1200 to 1300 rads, and the minimum lethal dose was about 700 rads. The comparative LD/sub 50/ with respect to 180 kv x-rays was ~0.55. The LD/sub 50/50/ value for the rats was 1000 to 1050 rads, the minimum absolute lethal dose was 1450 to 1550 rads, the minimum lethal dose was ~600 rads, and the relative biological effectiveness was ~ 0.65. The changes observed in the sex organs on irradiation with 660-Mev protons were less irreversible than the changes in the sex organs observed on irradiation with x-rays. The carcinogenic effect was as high or higher on irradiation with 660-Mev protons than the number of cancers observed on irradiation with x-rays. Various mercapto compounds showed a protective effect in increasing the number of survivals as compared to a control group which was irradiated with 660-Mev protons but was not treated with the protective mercapto compound.
