White mice were subjected to 660 Mev proton doses of 800 and 1000 rads. The mice were killed at various times after the irradiation, and a total of 3000 to 5000 cells from the bone marrow were examined in order to determine the number of degenerate cells, and the mitotic activity of the cells. With a dose of 800 rads, the number of degenerate cells is 2% one hour after the irradiation, and reached a maximum of 5% three hours after the irradiation. The number of degenerate cells then decreases to a normal value two days after the irradiation. With a dose of 1000 rads, the number of damaged cells attains a maximum of 8.5% in three to five hours after the irradation. No mitoses were observed for the first three hours after irradiation. The mitotic activity then began to rise, and attained a normal vaiue after two days. A comparative experiment was run by giving the mice a Co/sup 60/ dose of 800 rads. lt was found that the number of degenerate cells from the Co/sup 60/ irradiation is a factor of at least two greater than the number of degenerate cells observed by proton irradiation at a dose of 800 rads. The relative biological effectiveness of the protons is 0.3, when compared to the effectiveness of the gamma rays. (TTT)
