DETERMINATION OF THE RBE OF 14-Mev NEUTRONS USING 14 DAY OLD GRASSHOPPER EMBRYOS (CHORTOPHAGA VIRIDIFASCIATA AND ENCOPTOLOPHUS SORDIDUS) (thesis)

Technical Report ·

May 1983. 85p. The LD/sub 50/ determined for 14-day, 15-day, and 17- day Chortophaga embryos irradiated with 200 Kvp x rays was respectively 450 rads, 400 rads, and 580 rads. The mean lethal dose for 14-day, 15-day, and 17-day Encoptolophus embryos irradiated with 200 Kvp x rays was respectively 510 rads, 580 rads, and 630 rads. The LD/sub 50/ for 14-day Chortophaga embryos irradiated with 14 Mev neutrons was 370 rads. The RBE of 14 Mev neutrons was determined to be 1.22. The mean lethal dose determined for any group of Chortophaga and Encoptolophus embryos was dependent on the stage of embryo development. The hatching time of the eggs irradiated with x rays was delayed. The amount of delay was increased as the dose of x rays was increased. The period of hatching was also spread over a greater length of time with increased doses of x rays. (auth)
