EXTRACTION-PHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PROTACTINIUM(V) WITH ARSENAZO III (in Russian)

A sensitive color reaction between Pa(V) and arsenazo III is described. The molar extinction coefficient of solutions of the protactinium-reagent compound at 680 mu is 2.2x 10/sup 4/. An extraction-photometric method for the determination of protactinium with arsenazo III was worked out. The method includes the extraction of the protactinium--arsenazo III complex from 7 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solutions with isoamyl alcohol, washing the extract with a 0.5 M solution of oxalic acid in 7 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, and measurement of the optical density of the extract. The method permits the determination down to 0.3 gamma of protactinium in 1 ml in the presence of large quantities of Al, Fe, Ni, Mn(II), Cr(III), La, and in the presence of milligram quantities of U(VI), Nb(V), Zr(IV), Th(IV), and other elements.
