Reaction of protactinium solution 2.99 x 10/sup -4/ M in 0.1 n HCl containing 0.01 M NH/sub 4/F with chlorophosphonazo(III) (3,6-bisSTA(4-chloro-2- phosphonophenyl)azo! -4, 5-dihydroxy2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid) resulted in a blue-green compound. The absorption curves of chlorophosphonazo (III) with Pa(V) are constructed and the maximum absorptions for Pa compounds are found at 630 and 688 m . The Pa compound spectrum is closer to the Np(IV) and Th(IV) spectra than to Np(V) and U(VI). The experiments indicate that arsenazo III and chlorophosphonazo III behave identically. (R.V.J.)
