The causes of biochemnical mutations in microorganisns are of a great interest because the mutants contain injured cells in a well-defined portion of the biosynthesis chain of a given compound. This problem was studied in the yeast cells Torulopsis utilis in aqueous suspension which were exposed to the gamma radiation of a 55 r/sec Co/sup 60/ source, determining the appearance of mutants in the original, normal cells and in those formed after irradiation and deficient in biofin. It was found thaf irradiation increases the frequency of biochemical mutations as compared with spontaneous mutations. The frequency of biochemical mutations increases in direct proportion with the exposure; this linear correlation was more marked in the case of the biotindepleted strain. No linearity could be established between the dose and the number of cells with a slowed-down growth rate. Some of the slowly growing mutants exhibited injuries to their cytochromes, ofhers to the cell division mechanism. The frequency of the various biochemical mutations was not the same: mutations depleted in biotin and B/sub 1/ content occurred most frequently. (TTT)
