NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CULTIVATION OF FULLY DEUTERATED YEASTS TORULOPSIS UTILIS AND SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE
The effects of 99.6% D/sub 2/ on the growth of two species of yeast were investigated. Torulopsis utilis was found to require thiamine in addition to the D/sub 2/O nutrient mediuin containing inorganic salts, ammonium sulfate, and glucose, and supplementation with cocarboxylase or the thiazole moiety of the thiamine molecule was also effective but supplementation with the pyrimidine moiety was not. However, after several successive subcultures in D/sub 2/O, the yeast cells still retain their capabillty for thiamine biosynthesis in H/sub 2/C. Similar work with Saccharomyces cerevisiae in D/sub 2/O medium indicates that this yeast requires inositol and pyridoxine in addition to thiamine. It is concluded that the substitution of D/sub 2/O for H/sub 2/O impairs the capabilities of these yeasts for the biosynthesis of some vitamins. (D.L.C.)
