IMPROVED NUCLEAR POWER REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4785410
A power reactor consisting of a pressure vessel filled with water as a moderator and enclosing tubes in which the fuel elements are arranged is described. Steam is led over these elements in order to cool them. The water moderator is kept at a temperature and pressure essentially equal to those of the saturated steam coolant entering the tubes. Preferably the top portion of the pressure vessel is separated by a horizontally divided wall from the remaining vessel space and forms an entrance header for the steam coolant, while tubes of the first kind are suspended at their upper open extremities by this dividing wall. Inner tubes enclosing the fuel element are placed conxially in the tubes of a first kind and pass through the header space. The steam coolant first flows downwards from the header through the interspace bounded by the coaxial tubes, rising afterwards through the inner tube before leaving the reactor vessel. The reactor is also provided with vertical control tubes with heavy water, the level of which is controlled for controlling the reactor reactivity. (NPO)
