NUCLEAR SUPERHEATING REACTOR WITH LIQUID MODERATOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4792721
A nuclear superheating reactor comprises a pressure vessel with a horizontal grid plate near the bottom of the vessel for supporting vertically disposed elongated reactor tubes enclosing the fuel elements. The space under this grid plate serves as entrance header for steam to be superheated fIowing in an upwards direction through the said reactor tubes. Preferably the reactor tubes are provided at their upper open ends with collars each touching the collars of the adjacent tubes so that they mutually support themselves at these upper ends. The space between, that is to say outside, the reactor tubes is filled with a liquid moderator compatible with the steam and in communication with the space above the reactor tubes, this space serving as exit header for the superheated steam. Preferably the reactor tubes are double-walled, the interspace between the walls being occupied by stagnant steam forming a thermal insulation. The inner wall suitably has helical ribs touching the surfaces of the cylindrical fuel elements and creating in this way a helical path for the rising steam. (NPO)
