THE INFLUENCE OF THE RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPE P$sup 32$ ON THE BLOOD CELLS IN THE LYMPH AND BONE MARROW. I. THE BLOOD
The peripheral blood pictures of 3-month-old rabbits were studied following the injections of P/sup 32/ of 100 and 300 mu c/kg and 1 mc/kg, respectively. After injecting 1 mc/kg of P/sup 32/, a marked decrease of RBC, Hb, and reticulocytes, and hypo- or hyper-chromic anaemia was observed. In addition, anisocytosis and nuclear erythrocytes, and Jolly's corpuscles were noted. In the recovery stage, however, the reticulocytes were increased. The leukocytes decreased in number and percentage immediately after the administration. A degenerative picture of lymphocytes was noted. The degree of damage was proportional to the amount of P/sup 32/. The number of neutrophilic red granules of the lymphocytes was different with the amount of P/sup 32/ and it was parallel to a mean value of mitochondria at 100 mu c/kg. It increased up to 3 days after the injection at 300 mu c/kg and decreased after the initial increase when a mean value of mitochondria returned to normal. The mean value of mitochondria of lymphocytes showed a marked decrease immediately aftter the injection in all cases. The staining ability became low. Rapid degeneration, destruction, and development damage of the lymphocytes were evident, and its recovery was retarded proportionately to the amount of P/sup 32/.
