BLOOD FORMATION IN CASE OF CHRONIC ACTION OF IRON-59

The hematopoiesis of rabbits subjected to daily oral treatment with small amounts of Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ at a rate of 1 and 10 mu C/kg of body weight was investigated by means of a morphological study of the bone marrow of the ilium for periods up to 14 months. Myelograms were taken to determine the number or reticulocytes and nuclei. It was found that introduction of 1 to 4 mg/ kg of stable FeCl/sub 3/ caused, during the first months of the experiment, an increase of the hemoglobin content, followed by a corresponding increase of the erythroblasts. Administration of 1 mu C/kg of Fe/sup 59/ resulted in the temporary stimulation of the erythropoiesis. The larger daily amounts of 10 mu C/kg of Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ disturbed the hematopoiesis; simultaneously, the hemoglobin content and the size of the erythrocytes increased. Lymphopenia and qualitative changes of the lymphocytes were observed during the second month after starting the treatment with Fe/sup 59/. (TTT)
