BLOOD FORMATION AFTER VENESECTION OF RABBITS SUBJECTED TO CHRONIC TREATMENT WITH IRON-59 (in Russian)

The regenerative properties of the blood-producing organs of rabbits subjected to daily treatment with Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ for periods of 6 to 7 months were investigated. The animals were subjected to blood letting and were treated with 10 mu C/kg of body of Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ or with the corresponding amount of stable FeCl/sub 3/. After the Fe/sup 59/ treatment, no difference was noted in the amount of the erythrocytes and the hemoglobin content of the blood of the control and the experimental animals. The treated animals developed more slowly and to a lesser extent the posthemorrhagic reaction in the bone marrow; regeneration of the hemoglobin was also slowed down. The erythroblast portion of the bone marrow was damaged. The absence of posthemorrhagic lymphocytosis and the development of absolute lymphopenia was also observed in the treated animals. The change in the thrombocytopoiesis was indicated by the absence of thrombocytosis after bleeding. Treatment with stable Fe salt after venesection did not have any noticeable effects. (TTT)
