THE EFFECT OF PREGNANCY AND PARTURITION ON THE BLOOD PRODUCTION OF RABBITS SUBJECTED TO THE CHRONIC EFFECTS OF IRON-59 (in Russian)

During periods of pregnancy and parturition, the hemopoiesis of animals exposed to the chronic effects of Fe/sup 59/ occurs under conditions of iron deficiency and disturbance of the endocrine equilibrium. The problem was investigated by treating female rabbits daily with 10 mu C/kg of body weight of Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ for 10 months prior to pregnancy and mating both the test and the control animals with normal males. The composition of the peripheral blood and the morphological structure of the bone marrow were systematically examined during the pregnancy and after parturition. The results indicated functional insufficiencies in the blood-forming organs during the test period. Anemia appeared at an earlier stage of the pregnancy and became more marked after parturition, when it was accompanied by pathological changes of the erythrocytes. The absolute number of the lymphocytes decreased during the pregnancy of the treated animals and reached the level of definite lymphopenia. No postparturition lymphocytosis was observed. (TTT)
