THE EFFECT OF THE IRRADIATION ON PREGNANT ANIMALS WITH X-RAYS ON THE PERIPHERAL BLOOD CHANGES IN THE PROGENY (in Russian)

Pregnant white mice were given a single x-ray dose of 200 r each day on the l2th to l9th day of pregnancy. The amount of hemoglobin and the number of erythrocytes, reticulocytes, and leukocytes in the progeny were determined on the lst, lOth, 3Oth, and 45th day of life. The maximum damage to the red blood cells was observed for irradiation on the l7th day of pregnancy. The reasons for the appearance of leucopenia and anemia in the 45 day old animals that had been irradiated on the l2th to l3th day of pregnancy are not clear, but it is believed that rudiments of the mesenchyme (lymphatic nodes, the spleen, and marrow) are damnged during irradiation in this period of pregnancy.
