In view of the selective accumulation of Fe/sup 59/ in the highly radiation-sensitive bone marrow, determination of hematological changes was chosen as a promising method for determining the radiotoxic effect of this isotope. The study involved the examination of the dynamics of changes in the peripheral blood of white rats after the intratracheal administration of insoluble Fe/sup 59/ oxide and soluble Fe/sup 59/ citrate. The amount of hemoglobins erythrocytes, reticulocytes, lenkocytes, and the cytological changes were determined every month for a period of 15 months. It was found that introduction of various Fe/sup 59/ compounds in the activity range from 27.5 to 1.06 mu C causes qualitative and quantitative changes in the white blood cells, representing the first stage of damage to hematopoietic activity. The changes consisted primarily in sudden variations of lymphocytes and neutrophilia. Increase of the amount of erythrocytes and of the hemoglobin of the rat's blood is considered a specific effect of Fe/sup 59/. No differences were noted between the effect of the soluble and insoluble compounds. A treatment, repeated 3 times, with 0.03 mu C of Fe/sup 59/ caused less sharp changes than the highly active compounds. (TTT)
