Insoluble compounds of Fe/sup 59/-ferric oxide, P/sup 32/-chromium phosphate, and Au/sup 198/-colloidal gold administered intratracheally to rats induced squamous cell carcinomas of the lung with metastases to the pleura and regional and mesenteric lymph nodes. Soluble solutions of Na/sup 24/ and Fe/sup 59/ or insoluble Fe/sup 59/-ferric oxide of low activity did not induce tumors within 24 months. Both the soluble and insoluble radioactive compounds caused degenerative changes and impaired permeability of the walls of the blood vessels followed by the development of perivascular and peribronchial sclerosis. Results indicate that insoluble radioactive compounds may create large depth doses of radiation in the foci of their deposition. (C.H.)
