The distribution and the removal of various Fe/sup 59/ compounds introduced through the respiratory tract was investigated by administering the insoluble Fe/sup 59/ oxide powder the soluble Fe/sup 59/ citrate to white rats, using the bloodless intratracheal method. The activity of the materials ranged from 18 to 20 mu C for the citrate and 15to 22 mu C for the oxide. The gamma activity of the Fe/sup 59/ eliminated in the urine and feces of the animals was determined daily for periods up to 16 days. Some of the animals were killed at various times from 1 hour to 20 days after the introduction of the labeled material. It was found that the main amount of the Fe/sup 59/ citrate is absorbed from the lungs during the first day and is distributed throughout all the organs, accumulating preferentially in the liver, the bone marrow, and the blood. At the end only about 9% remains at the place of the original introduction. On the other hand, nearly all of the Fe/sup 59/ oxide is retained in the lungs and is removed at a slow rate with the sputum, leaving at the end about 85% of the original amount in the lungs. (TTT)
