MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN RATS AFTER INTRATRACHEAL INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS IRON-59 COMPOUNDS

Injury to the respiratory system by Fe/sup 59/ was investigated by determining the nature of pathologic anatomnical changes in animal organisms after introducing various Fe/sup 59/ compounds into the lungs and estimating the internal dose which leads to the development of malignant tumors in the pulmonary tissue. Up to 12% of the activity of the Fe/sup 59/ preparations was due to admixtures of Co/sup 60/; this fact was taken into account in the calculation of tissue dose. The radiotoxic effects were followed for periods up to 15 months. Preparations of Fe/sup 59/ citrate or oxide with activities of 27.5, 3.36, and 1.06 mu C were administered once and 0.03 mu C three times to white rats. The largest amount led in many cases to the development of purulent inflammatory processes in the bronchia with sclerotic changes in the peribronchial tissue. The largest amount introduced exceeded the MPC value by a factor of 250 and resulted in increased mortality, attributable in most cases to malignant tumors in the lungs. Lung cancer was noted 6 months after the introduction of Fe/sup 59/ , corresponding to a relatively low-level irradiation of the pulmonary tissue, ranging from 480 to 9790 rads. Treatment with 0.03 mu C of Fe/sup 59/ 3 times, corresponding to the MPC value, caused purulent changes in the pulmonary tissue. These data, indicating a marked carcinogenic activity of Fe/sup 59/, may be used for determining the permissible levels of insoluble Fe/sup 59/ compounds in the air. (TTT)
