Examination of red blood corpuscles is of special interest in the study of the chronic effects of Fe/sup 59/ because the radioactive iron enters into the hemoglobin molecule and thus participates directly in the erythropoiesis. The effect of Fe/sup 59/ on the blood was investigated in rabbits treated with 1 and 10 mu C/kg of Fe/sup 59/Cl/sub 3/ or with similar amounts of stable FeCl/sub 3/. An ocular micrometer was used for measuring the diameters of the erythrocytes during the experiment. It was found that the number of the red corpuscles of the untreated animals varied only slightly; treatment with stable Fe solution resulted in a slight increase in the hemoglobin content; introduction of 10 mu C/ kg of Fe/sup 59/ caused a more marked increase and also qualitative changes in the erythrocytes, such as the appearance of macroplanocytosis and enhancement of the anisocytosis at the periphery. The smaller dose resulted in the stimulation of the erythropoiesis during the first months; effects indicating damage to the erythropoietic process appeared later and were less marked than in the case of the large dose. The osmotic resistance remained unchanged in all cases. (TTT)
