RADIATION-INDUCED POLYMERIZATION OF ACETONE AND HALOGENOACETONE

A method for obtaining an inexpensive and pure elastic polymer from acetone is described. Carefully purified and dried acetone frozen below its melting point (--95 deg C) was irradiated by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays in vacuo (<10/sup -4/ mm). The unreacted acetone was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The yield of the polymer was 1 ~0.1%, and the G-value was 30 ~ 500. The polymer was soluble in acetone, chloroform, and CCl/sub 4/, and its stability could be increased slightly by irradiating in the presence of a small amount of a vinyl compound. Observations made on the absorption spectrum suggested that the main chain consisted of a structure of polyether-type group at the end. Successful halogenation was obtained by irradiating a purifled bromoacetone sample at --78 deg C (<10/sup -4/ mm), and a yield of 13% was obtained. Only 0.12% yield was obtained in the case with chloroacetone. The monomers contributed to the thermal stability, graft copolymerization, cros s - linking vulcanization, and dye properties by means of the halogen atom. (OID)
