The effect of a solvent on radiation-induced polymerization of vinyl chloride at --78 deg C was examined in methanol, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, trichlorethylene, acetone, and tetrahydrofuran. The over all activation energy for the polymerization of vinyl chloride was about 4.7 kcal/mole at 4.6 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr. The rates for the polymerization of monomeric vinyl chloride depended greatly on the mole fraction of the vinyl chloride in the solvent. At -78 deg C, the degree of polymerization of the product was almost constant except ior polymerizatson in a highly diluted methanol solution. The degree of polymerization of the products decreased with an increase in the mole fraction of vinyl chloride in a methanol solution. rests made on the polymerization of vinyl chloride in methanol in the presence of about 1% of inorganic salts, organic peroxides, and mercaptans did not reveal a strik- ing accelerating effect.
