Vinyl benzoate samples in the boiling point range of 74 ~ 76 deg C/3 mm Hg were irradiated with a 1000-c source at dosage rate of 8.l x l0/sup 4/ r/hr in the temperature range of 40 ~ --20 deg C in vacuo. The results of induced bulk polymerization were as follows: no induction period was observed; the percentage of conversion up to about 30% was directly proportional to the irradiation time from 3.2 x 10/sup 5/ ~ 5.2 x 10/sup 3/ r/hr at 15 deg C; the polymerization rate was proportional to a power of 0.87 of the dosage rate, and the activation energy of polymerization was 2.5 kcal/mole; and the polymer obtained had a relatively low degree of polymerization and was not crystalline.
