Samples of 0.08 ~ 0.l3-mm thick PVA film with a water content of approx 5% were irradiated with a 1000-c Co/sup 60/ source at 3.75 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr under various conditions. The results showed that the weight loss of PVA was independent of the temperature and atmosphere but was directly proportional to the radiation dosage. A quantitative analysis of the PVA solubility data is described. G/sub q/ values of crosslinking were 1.5, 2.7, 4.5, and 30.4 in air, and 1.3, 1.6, 2.2, and 3.8 in vacuo for irradiation at 90, 120, 140, and 170 deg C, respectively. G values for the main fractures were 0.27, in vacuo under the same temperature dimensions. The activation energies of cross-linking and main chain fractures were 7.5 and 2.0 kcal/mole in air, and 2.7 and 2.2 kcal/mole in vacuo, respectively, above 100 deg C. Below this temperature, the activation energies decreased in both cases. (OID)
