RADIATION-INDUCED POLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE OXIDE (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4681922
Radiation-induced polymerization of styrene oxide is reported. It was found that ring-opening polymerization of the monomer is possible in a liquid state. Apparent activation energy, was 35 kcal/mole in the case of electron irradiation and 16.5 kcal/mole in gamma irradiation in the liquid phase. The polymerization was inhibited strongly by radical scavengers. It was concluded from these experimental results that the polymerization of styrene oxide would proceed via radical mechanism in the liquid state. Apparent activation energy of the polymerization in the solid state of the monomer was --0.2 kcal/mole in the temperature region -80 deg to --136 deg C, 0.5 kcal/mole in the region --150 deg to --196 deg C.
