RADIATION-INDUCED POLYMERIZATION OF NITRILE COMPOUNDS

Analyses of the elastic polymer obtained by means of Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation at a dosage rate of 1.68 x 1.68 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr to 1/95 x 10/sup 4/ r/ hr up to dosages of 9.2 x 10/sup 5/ r to 5.6 x 10/sup 6/ r from --78 to 20 deg C on nitrile compounds, such as acetonitrile, proprionitrile, and isobutyronitrile in liquid or solid phase are described. The spectra of the dark brown polymers showed that the structure of the main chain was the conjugated double bond of --C = N--. The degree of polymerization was small and corresponded to the G-value range of 8 ~ 20. The polymer did not have an obvious melting point and was soluble in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide, but not in alcohol, benzene, and cyclohexane. (OID)
