AUTOMATIC SCRAM DEVICE OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR IN WHICH A COOLANT FLOWS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4782371
The automatic scram device comprises a container in the exit header of the reactor coolant and encloses a gaseous neutron absorber held at the temperature of the hot gas circulating in the exit header. This container communicates via ducts with normally closed nozzles in the entrance header of the coolant and are directed so that when the closure is broken the neutron absorbing gas flows directly with the cold coolant into the reactor channels to shut down the chain reaction. Preferably the closure of the nozzles is constituted by a diaphragm which bursts when the pressure in the container, caused by a forbidden temperature increase of the hot coolant, exceeds a predetermined value.
