IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL ELEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4781669
An emergency shutdown device for pressurized gascooled reactors is designed which is not adversely affected by disarrangement or misalignment of the core such as would be caused by a breach in the coolant circuit. The device comprises a container housing two members of neutron-absorbing material, the first member being a tube and the second member being boron steel shot held within the tube by a diaphragm-valve plug arrangement. The whole device is positioned within a core channel, and in the event of a sudden reduction in gas pressure, the shot is released to increase the neutron absorption capacity of the device. (D.L.C.)
