A reactor fuel element comprising a closed can enclosing a fuel body is designed with an improved end closure. The end closure has a peripheral flange which fits over one end of the fuel body and is butt-welded to the end of the can. The end closure may also be provided with fins. An insulating material may be inserted between the fuel body and the end closure, together with spacing means as described in British Patent 894,l93. The advantage of this end closure design is thst in the event of a leak through the weld, escape of fission products into the coolant is not delayed and thus leak detection occurs early. (D.L.C.)
