A nuclear reactor fuel element consisting of a nuclear fuel member enclosed in a protective sheath is patented. The design includes Burst Cartridge Detection (B.C.D.) apparatus to detect fission products that may escape through leaks in the sheaths. Since the most likely place for a leak in this fuel- element design is at the joint between a minor part (such as an end cap) and the main body of the sheath, an insert of nuclear fuel material is placed in proximity to the joint to give an early warning of a defect.
