FUEL ELEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

A finned, sheathed fuel element is designed for rapid detection of any small leak in the welds of the end cap to the sheatlh. Grooves are provided between the inside of the end of the sheath and the end cap, and fuel inserts slightly smaller than the grooves are located in the grooves. In case of a leak, fission products from the insert have only a short path to the coolant and thence to the burst cartridge detection apparatus. (D.L.C.)
